IN CHARACTER
Name: Declan Lynch
Canon: The Raven Cycle
Canon Point: Off screen in the last book (chapter 64), watching his brother Matthew dying, calling his brother Ronan to try and find out what’s happening to both of them.
Age: 19
History: Declan was born in Singer’s Falls, Virginia to Niall and Aurora Lynch. He’s the eldest of the brothers Lynch, followed by Ronan, the brother who can dream things into reality like their father, and their youngest brother Matthew, who Ronan dreamt up when he was three, unbeknownst to him. On the outside, Declan’s life seems like it’s ordinary in every single way. On the inside, he’s hiding secrets for the entirety of his family. Often times when their father traveled away for months, Declan was left to take care of and protect his family from people who his father did business with, often leaving him in the trunk of a car, or handcuffed while he watched their home (The Barns) get ransacked. In the books he’s stated as the most natural son of Niall Lynch. He’s neither a dream, or a dreamer. He doesn’t really belong, and no one in the Lynch family ever really tried to make any place for him there.
Everything changed when Niall Lynch was murdered and their mother Aurora became comatose days later, because dream creatures cannot function on their own without their dreamers. The massive upheaval left the three brothers without a home due to the conditions in their father’s will, having all three of them kicked out of The Barns, and Declan was left in charge of Ronan and Matthew’s inheritance, which he wasn’t supposed to hand over until they both turned eighteen.
From then on, a rift between Ronan and Declan grew that seemed unfixable, the two of them constantly at each other’s throats. Niall taught all of his boys to fight, and that’s what they ended up doing with each other, because Ronan wanted to do his own thing and Declan wanted to look out for Ronan and make sure he had a future that was something more than what their father had been doing, fearing that he would be taken or killed due to Niall’s recklessness.
He wants Ronan to stay in school and so he enlists the help of Ronan’s best friend Gansey, letting Ronan stay at Gansey’s warehouse home, Monmouth Manufacturing. If Ronan goes to class as keeps up his grades, he’s allowed to stay there with him instead of at the Aglionby Academy dorms with Declan. It seems that during this time Declan and Gansey speak to each other the most, and Ronan does his best to avoid his older brother. This is a constant struggle for Declan, their fights often escalating into an all out brawl and at one point Declan even claims that he’s washing his hands of Ronan, but has no intention of actually doing so.
Declan is used to Niall bringing trouble to the family, having had to clean up all his messes both before and after his death, but his brothers know nothing about this. They have no idea how deep Niall dragged Declan into any of if. Trouble starts up again when The Gray Man, an assassin, pays Declan a visit at the dorms, beating him close to unconsciousness because he wants to find The Greywaren. The Gray Man believes this is an object, but Declan knows The Greywaren is his brother, and will protect him with his life. He tries to contact Ronan to no avail, then later he lies to Ronan about the attack, but begs him to keep his head down and stay out of trouble.
In the meantime, Ronan figures out how to wake their mother, taking him to the forest where his dream things come from, but Declan is never present and there’s some speculation on if he was ever told or invited.
After that, Declan goes off to college in DC, but he comes back every weekend, a four hour round trip, to see his brothers and go to church with them. During one of those trips he ends up telling Ronan that Matthew was dreamt up by him when Ronan was only three, giving Declan more of a reason to feel like an outsider.
In the final book, Declan finally reveals his secrets to Ronan, that he had been protecting Ronan for many years, keeping his dreaming ability a secret and that he’s still cleaning up their father’s messes and bad deals, especially the one concerning something called The Greywaren, which by now Ronan had figured out was him. Declan has been conducting Niall's business out of DC to keep the scent off of the Barns and Ronan, but he got word that something big was going down in Henrietta and he wants to get Matthew and Ronan out of there, destroy The Barns and be done with it all. Ronan tells Declan to take Matthew, but the Barns is his home and he’s not leaving.
Later that night, Ronan has his friends, along with Declan and Matthew over at the Barns for a birthday celebration/goodbye party. Declan and Ronan talk on the roof, looking out over the land like they used to when they were younger. They both have a better understanding of each other now that everything was laid out on the table.
Declan’s last part in the book is offscreen, when a demon from Ronan’s dream forest Cabeswater is trying to tear him apart from the inside and Declan is calling Ronan’s phone frantically because like their mother, a dream person can’t function without their dreamer. Matthew was being unmade because Ronan was dying. This is the point at which Declan gets pulled from Virginia and ends up at the Ingress Complex.
Personality: Declan is the most ambitious Lynch brother, and yet he’s the black sheep of the family. He’s not a dreamer like his father Niall and his brother Ronan and he’s not a dream person like his youngest brother Matthew and his mother are. This has him feeling displaced and disposable. It doesn’t help that Niall was generally dismissive of him, which lead to Ronan doing the same because he idolized Niall a great deal. Regardless of that, Declan is extremely loyal to his family, devoting nearly all of his life to protecting them.
Niall would use Declan when he needed help dealing his artifacts and left him no other choice but to constantly be on the look out, protect their family from a young age, so even after Niall was dead, Declan didn’t hesitate to continue his father’s dealings, because he knew it was the only thing that would keep Ronan and Matthew safe. Declan is persistent, even if no one appreciates all that he does, Ronan going so far as hating him and letting him know as much.
He has always been the responsible one in their family as well, for all of these same reasons. He tries his best in every situation, even if he grows frustrated, especially with Ronan.
He’s extremely cautious bordering on paranoid at times, but all of the events in his life have made him this way and he hasn't really had any reason not to be. Their father Niall’s business partners knew where the Lynch family lived and would sometimes come and ransack the house. One of those same people eventually killed Niall, leaving him for Declan to find (unfortunately Ronan was the one who found him instead)
He’s good at dealing with the situation at hand, trying to come up with solutions for whatever problems might arise. When Declan gets word of something big going down in Henrietta, he stays calm on the phone with one of the buyers who is warning him, even though he’s scared for Ronan, knowing they could find out about him being The Greywaren and come for his family. He decides it’s time for them to get out of there and he makes this decision fast and sticks to the plan as much as he can, depending on how much Ronan will work with him.
He has no problem lying about anything that will protect his family, sometimes those lies carrying over into other situations because they come so easily to him. He’s learned that lies are only dangerous when you sometimes tell the truth. Throughout the book, not even the reader knows how much Declan has been doing behind the scenes, because he’s so good at concealing it. He has a seemingly easy smile that Ronan often comments on, claiming it lets him get away with lying through his teeth and this quality is why he'll be the perfect politician. Adam muses that Gansey prefers Ronan over Declan because Gansey values the truth. Of course, Declan’s secrets are a great source of animosity between Ronan and Declan because Ronan doesn’t really know the truth of what Declan has been doing for all of them. Later on, when Declan goes into more detail about everything he’s done, Ronan starts to come around and there are hopes that the two of them might finally fix this rift between them.
Declan doesn’t like to be alone and he makes it so that he never is. He’s described as a perpetual motion machine run by the energy of others. He gets along with everyone easily, naturally and he has a magnetic personality. He has been with his current girlfriend Ashley throughout the entirety of the books, but he is viewed as a womanizer, having different girlfriends quite often.
Setting: At first Declan will probably be relieved to be on Thisavrou and away from the dangers back home and living at St. Monmouth with his brothers, but he’ll become restless, needing to find work, possibly his own place. He’ll want to explore and make as many connections as possible. He would probably be very open to trying new things, feeling like he has more freedom here than he ever did back home.
Abilities/Skills: Declan is a skilled boxer, taught by his father. He’s very charming and good at keeping secrets. He plays various obscure Irish instruments that were not specified in the books. He is pursuing a political career and knowledgeable about the trade business.

[The feed turns on and Declan is sitting in a room that he's deemed the most official looking room at the place he's staying. His dark brown hair is perfectly combed into place and he has a smile on his face that could probably translate to 'Vote for Me,' if that's even a thing here. He's been tinkering around with his TAB for a while now so he has no problem setting it up]
Hi, I'm Declan Lynch.
[He lifts his hand in a quick and concise wave]
So, we're on a different planet. Never saw this one coming. Right, so I'm looking for something to fill my time while I'm here. I'm not great at sitting still, so if anyone wants to connect, that would be fantastic.
Mainly, I'm looking for a job that can utilize my degree in economics, my interest in politics and business management. A list of my skills can be provided on request. [Does he sound like a walking resume? Probably. But then he pauses] Or maybe I'll try something new while I'm here. Why not, right?

May. 29th, 2015 05:57 amDeclan Lynch has always kept tabs on his family. In his head, he laughs it off as a hobby at this point, one that was forced upon him because who the hell else was going to do it? Who the hell else was going to keep the status quo for the dreams and the dreamers, the son who was all dream and the one who was both. Oh, and himself. Of course himself, because who else was going to do that, too?
The hardest tab to keep track of is Ronan. Never keeping his head down when he's supposed to, only keeping his grades up when threatened, and making Declan feel a growing pit of emptiness where his little brother used to be.
So when he finds out about Ronan's new friend, he's livid. He's beyond livid, driving head first into disgust. He knew Ronan would race with Kavinsky every once in a while, but after what happened on the Fourth, the rest is just unfathomable. The worst part is, he's been hearing about Ronan's new companion from people all over Henrietta. What "those boys" were up to again last night. "Of course it was them. They stole that car. You remember Niall Lynch, don't you? And Kavinsky, with his mob family." Not exactly what Declan wants to hear over breakfast.
He can't even make it to his internship. He gets in his Volvo and drives to Monmouth, calling Ronan on his way there.
